I saw a ZIPCAR commercial recently and found the concept behind it ingenious. I wonder if the state of Colorado can apply for federal funding to secure 250 half-acre commercial lots in Denver Metro, so poor, single, Mexican-American mothers in the state's barrios can own and operate them as a small business franchise for the poor? They would help empower the poor to have access to affordable cars without the balloon payments in most car leases too. This would greatly benefit:
-Poor, arthritic elderly on a fixed-income who can't walk or carry their groceries, laundry to the laundromat
-Battered women & battered GLBT partners
-Pregnant teens
-Other poor, single mothers
-Disabled veterans, especially since we've recently laid off many of the U.S. Army's poor enlisted and denied them affordable housing, veterans' benefits, scholarships. This violates federal laws, including both the Fair Housing Act and Disabilities Act too.
-Unemployed coal plant workers, laid off by the recent U.S. Supreme Court's ruling to close down coal plants
-Day laborers and temporary, seasonal, part-time workers who are illiterate and continually denied employment, social security benefits, veterans' benefits, including compensation, food stamps, WIC, and low-income housing
-Diabetics
-Asthmatics
-Multiple sclerosis victims
-Heart attack victims
-Cancer victims
-Victims of the Aurora movie theater shooting, church shooting and school shootings
-Victims of the wildfires
-The poor widows and orphans of deceased firefighters and law enforcement officials, who heroically died protecting their communities
-Our vulnerable, poor widows and orphans of deceased veterans, who also heroically died protecting our very country
We need to gather the Democratic Party leaders in every state to petition our governors, so we can request federal funding for purchasing the commercial lots, and discounted bulk rates on the auto insurance premiums. Also, we need to purchase safe, reliable, fuel-efficient, reconditioned vehicles for the ZIPCARS, without sales/property taxes/emissions/safety inspections or registration costs.
For the half-acre commercial lots, there are many empty ones available for sale on W. Colfax Avenue, from Lakewood to Edgewater, Colorado too.
Due to Colorado's severe weather, and the increasing physical challenges of our aging, predominantly baby boomers, plus multiple sclerosis demographic, our state should get that federal funding as soon as possible. It will need to be addressed at every Democratic meeting within the state of Colorado.
Every poor senior citizen, who are malnourished, neglected, abused at extraordinarily high rates and have no challenged-friendly access to affordable, bilingual, culturally-sensitive healthcare of their own choice (PPO) would benefit greatly too.
