There's an exercise for emotional resiliency described as "re-writing one's internal script." When I look back at all the abuse, and torture I've suffered, I remember the bilingual, Mormon, and many other Christian missionaries. They shine in my childhood memories, like a bright red lighthouse/lantern/kite, a beacon of hope in such overcast skies at times.
It's healthier to rewrite my internal scripts, with a focus on their teachings, role modeling, because they actually loved me and wanted the best for me. Everyone has their own "Clare's" from the highly recommended "White Oleander" book, and movie. Who are the "Clare's" in your lifetime, latchkey orphans? Who are your emotional compasses?
