Some things that build rapport with people in a diverse setting:
1. Try to lean forward and look interested in the speaker.
2. Please nod, look awake and mimic their body language. If among large groups of young men, go ahead and take over as they will need feminist leadership to guide them away from brawling, or achieving social, even physical dominance over the battered, disenfranchised, challenged/GLBT/minority/smaller men. If surrounded by an inebriated gang, choose to be highly assertive towards the alpha rapist. The gang may decide not to prey upon you this way.
3. Look and act like a local. Speak Pidgin Hawaiian in Hawaii among the gang territories.
4. Hawaiian eye contact varies by the differences in many cultures there. Among Asian-American people, try not to make eye contact directly, as this can lead to an actual fight among unhinged, poly-addicted gangsters. The Sunset-Pipeline beach at the North Shore is a gangster-ridden beach. Always wear gang-neutral colors. Make friends with all the tattoo shops, as soon as you arrive. Visit China Town, Little Corea, and Little Japan. Remember, learn to be a Hawaiian. Be supportive of any charitable fundraising for the poor, minority prisoners.
