That was a difficult border for me as an American citizen, with a U.S. Navy military photo ID. I got extra attention from the suspicious, young, approximately 25 years old, male, Mexican border patrol agent, trying to come back to San Diego, California, back to my U.S. Navy barracks. He was extremely rude, 5'10, 185 pounds, Mexican, and armed.
I had to be questioned about who I was repeatedly, but he kept asking me the same question, "Are you really an American?" If you cross that border, go with at least a dozen, trustworthy people, an experienced charitable, tour guide company, and two tour guides who are bilingual. Try to get a U.S. passport as soon as possible, since that's more trusted than any U.S. Navy photo ID's for that border.
***Avoid consuming the uncooked, fresh fruit, or salad bars, only drink non-alcoholic beverages from cans or bottles you open yourself, and don't leave your food, or beverages unattended. It's dangerous to cross that border, so best not to go without that type of planned excursion.***
